A smooth, shiny fibre from Angora goats

about
Mohair

Mohair is a silky, lustrous fibre from Angora goats, known for its sheen and durability when responsibly sourced

South Africa is the leading producer, accounting for just over half of the global mohair supply.

The fibre is durable and takes dye exceptionally well, but its production involves environmental and ethical considerations. Angora goats are browsers rather than grazers, which can reduce land degradation risks, yet large-scale farming still poses challenges if not responsibly managed.

Mohair has faced scrutiny for animal welfare abuses in parts of the supply chain, particularly during shearing. Although conditions vary by farm, documented mistreatment has prompted global boycotts and the development of stronger welfare certification schemes such as the Responsible Mohair Standard.
