our client’s challenge

Cotton is everywhere, and so are the risks

With more than 70 countries producing cotton, each with different environmental, social, and governance (ESG) conditions, knowing where to turn was overwhelming for the client who wanted to diversify their cotton supply chain.

They wanted to understand issues like child labour, water use, traceability, and GMO crops, and they needed a way to make sense of it all.

how we helped

Turning a global landscape into a strategic roadmap

We kicked off with a workshop to align their sustainability and production teams and define the project scope.

From there, we conducted a deep global review, evaluating countries and initiatives through an ESG lens, using our in-house expertise in compliance, social impact, and environmental risks.

We created ranking systems to make trade-offs clear, and presented options in a format the brand could easily act on, from certification choices to potential pilots.

what our client gained

A deep dive into child labour risk

Clearer guidance on complex trade-offs

Tools to drive informed decisions

We provided a detailed analysis of child labour risks in the cotton value chain, helping the brand better understand the issue and evaluate sourcing regions more responsibly and transparently.

From GMOs to chemical use and water intensity, we helped the client weigh the real-world environmental and social risks of different regions and certifications.

We presented our findings in well-structured tables, risk rankings, and clear recommendations, equipping the client with everything they needed to make confident, forward-looking sourcing decisions.

the impact

Clarity, confidence, and a path forward

The client walked away with a clear understanding of the cotton industry’s ESG landscape and a strategy to diversify responsibly.

The work shaped how they think about material sourcing more broadly, and strengthened their ability to act, not just analyse.
